Lunch

Lunch will start at 11:30 am and end at 1:00 pm or when we run out of hamburgers. Our hamburger lunch is $12.00 a meal. The hamburgers are grilled at the museum and come with your choice of toppings, potato chips, iced tea, and a cookie. We plan to have homemade ice cream too. Seating for lunch is outdoors.

Lunch is free for our Compadres members. Ask us about becoming a Compadre.

Local History and Artifacts

Learn about our rich local history as you explore the museum. Admission is free, but we gladly accept donations. View our collections of historical artifacts, and bring your own! Archaeological experts will be on hand to examine and help to identify your arrowhead collection, fossils, or other artifacts.

CCM Historical Hero Honoree

Every year we honor a Historical Hero who has made contributions to share and preserve local history. This year our honoree is Archaeologist Paul Katz, Ph.D.

Paul Katz has a bachelor’s degree in art history from Swarthmore College and three graduate degrees in anthropology [archaeology focus] from the University of Kansas. His background and experience is in both prehistoric archaeology and museums. A large part of his archaeological fieldwork has been conducted in the northern Chihuahuan Desert region of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. Before moving to the Texas Panhandle in 1991, he was Director of the Kampsville Archaeological Museum, a component of the Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois. Back in Texas, he was Director of the Carson County Square House Museum in Panhandle, a position he held for eight years. More recently he was the Curator of the Texas Pharmacy Museum, a part of the Texas Tech School of Pharmacy in Amarillo. Dr. Katz is a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) and the Principal of PRIAM, a cultural and natural resources consulting firm started by his late wife Dr. Susana Katz. Before retiring from active fieldwork, he conducted small archaeological surveys for federal and state agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations. He is a past president of the Panhandle Archaeological Society and currently the Secretary-Treasurer. He is also a past president of the Friends of Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, where he is still a volunteer.

Outdoor Activities

We will have outdoor blacksmith and flintknapping demonstrations. Near the blacksmith shop we have a small cabin, windmill, and a replica wagon.

Local Documentary

We will be playing a local documentary that has never been publicly shown. Margie Purcell was interviewed at Comanchero Canyons Museum about her early life. She brought many photos and told stories about forgotten places near Quitaque including Rock Kitchen and the town of Grey Mule. If you love local history this is a must see.

Bring the whole family! Kids are welcome and encouraged to watch outdoor demonstrations and see all the artifacts in the museum.
